We are working to digitise all of the Film West Magazines created and issued by Galway Film Centre between 1989 and 2001 and have them all in one place. This archive is a work in progress, and below is the first round of issues – issues 1-10 of 46 quarterly magazines.

Issue 1 Jan-Mar 1989 – includes: The West’s Awake – how the Film Centre was established via an initial FÁS employment scheme; Film Centre opening on 16th December with special guests and first workshops and training opportunities; interview with Donncha O’hEallaithe on the need for local TV in Gaeltacht areas; articles about local animation and filmmakers/ companies; upcoming screenings; and the need for a national film agency.

Issue 2 Apr-May 1989 – includes: A Foot in the Door – covering the first 6 months of the Film Resource Centre and the Board; news segments on film production and archival work, upcoming film workshops on Script-writing with Martin Duffy, Production with Lelia Doolan, Sound with Tony O’Connor, Lights with Kevin Liddy, and Direction with Emer Reynolds; feature on Telegael; and VEC children’s film and animation programmes.

Issue 3 Jul/ Aug 1989 – includes: Film Fleadh special – celebrating the first Film Fleadh at Claddagh Palace in Galway (tickets available via the Arts Festival office); an open letter to the Editor – the common ambition of a ‘film industry’ in the West – by Dagmar Drabent; film reviews, script submission opportunities and film competitions; Klaus Lemke feature; European Funding Day Info Meeting at the Fleadh; Fleadh schedule; training films with Declan Gibbons.

Issue 4 – Winter 1989 – includes: Filming ‘The Field’, assistant director’s exposé from Connemara; how Janosch is dubbed; autumn workshops and participant reviews, Miriam Allen and Ruan O’Bric on Údaras and the Fund, Bob Quinn at Cannes, plus news on incoming production, events, and personalities; new film officer at Arts Council; Film Resource Centre progress report; next FRC project with Macnas; and film-related book reviews.

Issue 5 – Spring 1990 – includes: Filming ‘Fool’s Gold’ – the Film Resource Centre’s first production; Arts Council and Ireland Fund Funding; the Welsh answer to Teílifís na Gaeltachta – S4C, Canada’s Global Pillage – Christy King reviews the Toronto seminar; Pobal í mBoston- The Vanishing Species; upcoming productions, personalities, and events; feature on Steve Woods, Galway Film Society; film and book reviews; and Landmarks exhibition.

Issue 6 – Summer 1990 – includes: 2nd Galway Film Fleadh programme; new administrator for GFC – Celine Curtin; Producer Lelia Doolan goes to Africa; Director Bob Quinn witnesses miracles at Pesaro; Liam O’Leary on Rex Ingram; Traenáilte le haghaidh Theilifís na Gaeltachta; James Horgan – Ireland’s first animator?; Cork film festival call for entries; Media 92 and EAVE; and An Bille Craolacháin agus Teilifís; and The Movie Club in Shantalla.

Issue 7 – Autumn 1990 – includes: Films in Production in Ireland; What Liam O’Leary knows about your local cinema – IFI celebration of his 80th; Community TV Comes to the West; the Fleadh in pictures; Cian – amharc san Ioslainn; Programme details for Cork Film Festival; Hollywood on the Foyle/ California on the Corrib; Flashback flashes back; Parallax View: culture and media myths; Film West competition. GFC’s ‘Spiral Stairs’ short film production.

Issue 8 – Winter 1990 – includes: Access Community TV Network; Closeup – a profile of camera man Billy Keady; Parallax View – Information and Disinformation; Film insurance advice; The Film Resource Centre wins at Cork and Winter at Galway Film Resource Centre; Crossword, Inserts eg. ‘Film-making too Expensive in Ireland?’ An Ciste Teilifís na Gaidhlige agus ‘After Eights’ na hAlban; Galway Film and Video Co-op’s ‘My Roof is not my Home.’

Issue 9 – Summer 1991 – includes: 3rd Galway Film Fleadh with films by and about women and open air screenings; In Focus: An interview with Bob Collins by Donncha OhEallaithe “I think it’s a terrible pity that there isn’t a Film Development Fund in this country”; Whom the Gods Destroy; Film Resource Centre Script Awards; Summer at the Film Resource Centre; Crossword; Inserts eg. Young Filmmakers Ireland and Europe’s Youngest Cinema; and Bookshots.

Issue 10 – Autumn 1991 – includes: Interview with Marianne Sagebrecht; Why The quiet Man is a classic; Guide to Media 92; Crossword; Bookshots; Inserts including ‘Production in Small Countries Report’, Film Base/ RTÉ Script Competition, MEDIA Desk, and first Irish Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in Cork; Close-up, an interview with Christy King; Liam O’Leary feature on Brendan Stafford; Autumn at the Film Resource Centre, Parallax View; and Bookshots.
