The Little Cinema & Galway City of Film 48 Hour Challenge is an annual filmmaking competition which began in 2017, ran by Ardán in collaboration with the Little Cinema Galway and challenges 10 teams to make a 5 minute film in just 48 hours within Galway City and County.

It’s a Challenge designed to test the participants to their limits, setting them the challenge of conceiving, writing, shooting and editing a 5 minute film which includes an assigned Prop, a Line, a Genre and a Shot type in just 48 hours.

The Challenge takes place over a weekend from Thursday to Sunday. On the Thursday the teams find out what Prop, Line, Genre and Shot type they need to be use with the filmmaking kicking off at 9am Friday morning and running until 9am Sunday morning. It concludes with a screening of the films on the Sunday evening where a panel of experts decides which team wins the top prize of €500.

There are also awards for Best Cinematography, Editing, Special FX, Actor, Actress, Music Score, Use of Prop, Use of Line, Writing and an Audience Award.

To ensure the films are not pre-written ahead of the Challenge, the judges are instructed to take into consideration and heavily weight the way in which the Prop, Line, Genre and Shot type were incorporated when deciding the top prize.

When applying, teams submit a line for consideration for use in the films and organizers choose one line which each team must incorporate. Teams also bring along a prop with them to the launch, which are randomly assigned for use to other competing teams in the Challenge.
